In Reception we have lots and lots of fun learning through  a balance of whole class key skills sessions and child-initiated play experiences, both indoors and outdoors.

We always want to know what your child's developing interests are so please keep staff us up to date with these, so we can use them to tailor our learning opportunities around them. The Early Years team work hard to collect a wide range of observations and photos during children's choosing for learning. This helps us to understand exactly what they already know and contributes to the overall judgements we make against the Early Years Outcomes (link to website below).

Please support us by providing examples of what your child says and does at home, either through conversations with staff in class, also writing notes for their learning journeys. The Learning Journeys are a unique scrapbook of this special time in their childhood, and will be treasured memories of your child's time to keep and cherish.

Please visit our page regularly for updates on what we're getting up to!

What are we learning?

Autumn 1

We have an open door between 0850 and 0900 in which children self-register by selecting their name and choose either  hot dinner or packed lunches. During this time, parents can chat with staff.

Children take off their coats and put them on their named pegs.

Sound books are taken out of their book bags and put into the basket each morning.

The children then come to the carpet and do an activity with supervision, whilst listening to calming music.

At 9am, we have a Phonics session in which the children are introduced to a new sound/letter name. They practise saying the sound and name; the action that accompanies it; how to blend simple words together with that sound in and finally have a go at writing the letter in lower case and capitals. We use pre-cursive font which has a lead in from the line to support early letter formation.

After phonics, children then have open freeflow access to indoor and outdoor provision until tidy up time at 11am. During this time, our team interact and play with the children, following their interests and observing their play choices.

At 1115, we all sit down together for phonics activities; shared reading, talk for writing and songs.

At 1140 we get ready for lunch and talk about what we will be eating.

After lunch, the children are escorted to the big playground where they join the rest of school for their lunchtime playtime.

Watch this space for what we get up to next!

Children's Stages Of Development In Early Years

How you can help

with reading at home

Spend 5-10 minutes quality time (uninterrupted) every day listening to your child read /sharing a book together- using the reading scheme paper copy and/or our active learning online books and activities that your child can do on a computer or tablet.

*

(Reading strategies will vary as your child progresses through the various sets. Please ask for tips on how to support this in different ways during the year).
